WebJul 5, 2009 · The hosts file is for resolving the name to ip address. If your problem is a lack of reply (and the address is correct) then that is another problem. Have you verified your network is working by pinging the ip addresses instead of the names? Use the -a option on the ping command 'ping -a ipaddress' to help you figure out the name resolution. WebMar 3, 2024 · If the other sites you have "blocked" aren't having the same issue then it's only because you haven't use a hostname that leads to the same site but isn't in your hosts file. Finally, the hosts file is not meant for blocking. And isn't very effective at it because of the above reasons. Consider using a filtering proxy. – Cliff Armstrong

When you add an domain name to a HOSTS file, before querying its IP address to a DNS server, the HOSTS file is checked.
