Web9 Nov 2007 · Your Smitty was made in 1957 or 1958....probably in '58, and was probably one of the last Pre Model 29s. 1957-1958: S176000 to S181999 S&W started model numbering in 1957....and indeed, the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson says that they changed the Pre Model 29's to model numbers at S179000 in 1957. After the introduction of the .357 mag, they started making these revolvers for this cartridge. They became known as "registered magnums".
